  Abstract: Central Arizona Project navigates 2026: Low snow, looming deadlines, what's next?

  This presentation provides an introduction to the Central Arizona Project (CAP) and its critical role in delivering Colorado River water to central Arizona. As an engineering marvel, the 336-mile CAP aqueduct stretches from Lake Havasu to south of Tucson, serving 80% of Arizona's population.

  However, the Colorado River continues to face a historic drought dating back to the early 2000s, with 2026 potentially marking the worst snow year on record. This session will detail the 2026 snowpack and subsequent runoff, specifically focusing on inflow projections for Lake Powell and the resulting impacts on Lake Mead. We will also discuss recent operational adjustments announced by the Bureau of Reclamation to prevent Lake Powell from falling below its "power pool" elevation.

  Further complicating these record-low hydrological conditions is the expiration of current operating guidelines for Lakes Powell and Mead on September 30, 2026. The presentation will conclude with an overview of the Federal Government's actions to date, including describing the alternatives proposed in the Draft Environmental Impact Statement, how the alternatives impact CAP supplies in 2027 and beyond, and CAP's response.

  The Verde Headwaters Field School is being run by the Flagstaff Chapter of the Arizona Hydrological Society from June 4-7 at various locations in the Paulden, Chino Valley and Prescott area.   The "field school" will cover the following topics:

  • the area’s major drainages (the upper Verde and Granite Creek plus a few others);
  • area watersheds;
  • springs;
  • groundwater conditions; 
  • discussions about the Prescott water supply and management of the Prescott AMA;
  • geology of the area;
  • mine reclamation. 

  Fieldtrip goers can join us for the day (all must pay the $75 fee to be covered by insurance) or stay with us at the unique setting and accommodations of the Little Thumb Butte Bed & Breakfast (reserved for AHS members). You can have a private single room to yourself or share with a friend, park your RV (water/sewer/electricity sites available!), pitch a tent, or have a sleeping cot ready for you in John's ShiftPod superdome! You can also purchase meals from the B&B, brought to you farm-fresh by owner, Ann, and her staff. Gluten free, vegetarian, other diets can be accommodated.

  Sponsor levels include:

  • Verde Headwaters $750 (logo on field trip hat and top-tier in field trip guide; full-page advertisement in field trip guide, logo on registration page and  event Story Map), 
  • Stillman Lake at $500 (logo in field trip guide; ½ page advertisement in field trip guide, logo on registration page and event Story Map) or 
  • Granite Creek at $250 (logo in field trip guide, registration page and event Story Map). 

  Sponsorships will cover costs for van rental(s), fuel, field trip hats, spiral field guide printing costs, tips for the cooks and crew at the bed-n-breakfast. We might also refund the field trip fee for all if we have enough sponsor funds.

  The AHS Beer Tasting event is a fundraising opportunity for all individuals, businesses, and water resource leaders who value our incredible resources, Arizona watersheds and its water. The AHS Phoenix Chapter is hosting this beer tasting event to raise funds to support the AHS Foundation endowment for the Herman Bouwer Intern scholarships.

  Two drinks and food are included with ticket price.

  The sponsorship includes a brief description of each organization, company logos and event tickets for the sponsors attending personnel.

  All net proceeds will benefit the AHS Foundation.
