Verde River Headwaters Field School (4 Jun 2026)

The Verde Headwaters Field School is being run by the Flagstaff Chapter of the Arizona Hydrological Society from June 4-7 at various locations in the Paulden, Chino Valley and Prescott area. The "field school" will cover the following topics:

the area’s major drainages (the upper Verde and Granite Creek plus a few others);
area watersheds;
springs;
groundwater conditions;
discussions about the Prescott water supply and management of the Prescott AMA;
geology of the area;
mine reclamation.

Fieldtrip goers can join us for the day (all must pay the $75 fee to be covered by insurance) or stay with us at the unique setting and accommodations of the Little Thumb Butte Bed & Breakfast (reserved for AHS members). You can have a private single room to yourself or share with a friend, park your RV (water/sewer/electricity sites available!), pitch a tent, or have a sleeping cot ready for you in John's ShiftPod superdome! You can also purchase meals from the B&B, brought to you farm-fresh by owner, Ann, and her staff. Gluten free, vegetarian, other diets can be accommodated.

The Chapter is seeking several sponsors to help cover costs for this amazing trip!

Sponsor levels include:

Verde Headwaters $750 (logo on field trip hat and top-tier in field trip guide; full-page advertisement in field trip guide, logo on registration page and event Story Map),
Stillman Lake at $500 (logo in field trip guide; ½ page advertisement in field trip guide, logo on registration page and event Story Map) or
Granite Creek at $250 (logo in field trip guide, registration page and event Story Map).

Sponsorships will cover costs for van rental(s), fuel, field trip hats, spiral field guide printing costs, tips for the cooks and crew at the bed-n-breakfast. We might also refund the field trip fee for all if we have enough sponsor funds.

This trip is being run as a break-even event.

Can't make it for the whole field trip? Come join us for just a day! You will be responsible for your own meals during the trip.

Registration covers the cost of insurance and the field trip guide as well as other costs put on the field trip.

Thursday, June 4th

Starting at 1pm, join us for an overview of the area hydrogeology and hen drive to locations for talks on area geology and hydrogeology. After dinner is orientation and an overview of the area water development and features around Little Thumb Butte Bed and Breakfast.

Friday, June 5th:

Hike into the Upper Verde Wildlife Area, walk to see the confluence of Granite Creek and the Verde, walk to Stillman Lake and the nearby petroglyph site, view the geology of pre-Cambrian, Cambrian, and Devonian stratigraphy and some Tertiary volcanics. After lunch, drive and then hike to the Paulden Gauge from the Rio Verde Ranch. Discuss about FS watershed restoration activities in the area, and visit the low-flow SRP gauge.

Saturday, June 6th:

Drive to Big Chino Water Ranch, discuss the ranch history, acquisition, features, and current scientific work. After lunch, talk and discussion on designation of the Upper Verde as a Wild and Scenic River. Then drive to the Verde River State Park, Del Rio Springs, and Sullican Lake.

Sunday, June 7th

Drive to Watson Lake to discuss Prescott water supply. Drive to Goldwater Lake to discuss the history of the Prescott water supply, water quality monitoring, and watershed restoration in the area. Then explore the Goldwater Lake area. After lunch, visit mining remediation sites (carpooling encouraged!).

Cancellation policy: If you cancel before September 2, AHS will refund your registration fee minus a 10% processing fee; from September 3-8, AHS will refund 50% of your registration fee.
